This is something I have often wanted to do in my room. How do you handle children/families who don't participate? I fear starting something like this because of parents not making time for the project and then the child is left to "suffer" in the classroom. I guess the mailbox for valentines is the project that worries me the most. We asked for just shoe boxes this year and had some children never come to school with one.
Karen Day - (knock on wood) I've really never had any problem with families not participating. Because I make such a big deal out of the projects, allow them to share with the class, and display in the hall....I always seem to get a good response because my students absolutely do NOT want to be left out. The ones that don't bring them in....just have to listen while everyone else shares. As far as the v-day boxes, I give them a bag and let them decorate with stickers if they do not send in a mailbox. I hope that helps!!
